MARCELA FOUTEL
I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina a long time ago.
In 1975, during a tumultuous political time, I decided to leave. As far as I could go. The opposite side of the planet seemed a good option. Lived in the Uk and now the US.
At the age of eight, I entered my first painting competition, at a local park. I was not happy with my painting, the tree was challenging and the bench had the wrong perspective, it could be better, I thought. My father, an architect, had taught me all about perspective at an early age.
I was surprised when my name was called as the first prize winner. I was congratulated and given a small trophy.
I continued to think that I could do better most of my life .
Over the years I studied and explored all art mediums; drawing, painting, sculpture, printing. Every medium had its own excitement, challenges and interest. The medium I never considered was collage.
When I moved to Smithville in 2015, it was then that I decided to recycle most of my art books into new art pieces. Finding the right color, a texture, an image, a symbol, became one of the most enjoyable ways of creating. A way to incorporate a narrative and to explore new possibilities for expressing an idea or an emotion. To honor and extract colors and passages created by other artists, co-creators of sorts.
A new whole born from small pieces of printed paper, images from long and recent past combined.
I found the process magical.
